Changing Kids “Fooditude”
Posted on Apr 9, 2010 in Blog | 0 commentsWe all know kids are super unhealthy these days, right? The previous few generations of parents, led astray by the introduction and persistence of industrialized foods, unknowingly pushed (and still push) junk foods into their children. The result? Childhood obesity of epidemic proportions. The first generation of children to not outlive their parents. A bleak future.
The situation is a little overwhelming because it’s not just about the junk food they’re eating. That would be easy (in comparison). The problem stems from a fundamental disconnect with every thing around them. Kids don’t know where their food comes from or how it’s grown. They don’t sit at a family dinner table anymore and communicate. They feel no connection to the earth, to the fluctuations of the seasons, or to the people inhabiting our planet. Changing all of that is a massive undertaking. But it can be done, little by little.
There’s a small group women who teamed up to create a TV show for tweens that aims to tackle all of these issues simultaneously. Amazing. Called “Fooditude“, this tv show will cover everything from cooking and nutrition, food science (why beans make you fart!), environmental stewardship, culture and history, gardening, and social interaction.
But this project is still in it’s early stages and it’s looking for funding from YOU. Fooditude is using Kickstarter*, an awesome funding platform for creative projects (of any type), to help raise money to make this project a reality. Show your support, and your commitment to fundamentally changing the way future generations interact with food, the environment, and each other!
They just got started, and have 89 days to raise the $8,500 they need, so get crackin! This is not a loan, and it’s not really a “donation” either. Kickstarter projects ask for pledges at various levels and then offer “gifts” for each donation tier. Check out there project to see what kinds of goodies you’ll get for helping make this project a success!
Kickstarter has been attracting a lot of really great projects related to healthy, sustainable food. Here are some of my favorites:
JUST FOOD – High school students in IL are producing a cookbook of affordable, sustainable just recipes to distribute to their peers.
THE GARDEN SUMMER – A documentary: a summer garden and communities of local food exchange. The integration of old and new, beauty and function, growth and sustainability.
REMEDY QUARTERLY – A Quarterly magazine with stories of food and feeling good (with recipes)
THE FLEXITARIAN COOKBOOK - A book of unique, delicious, flexible recipes to please both vegetarians and carnivores. Proceeds benefit non-profits Slow Food USA and Yoga Bear
LITTLE CITY GARDENS – Two women looking to expand their urban farm business.
BK FARMYARDS - BK Farmyards transforms idle land to farmyards providing access to fresh, local, organic food. In 2010, their farmers are starting a 1-acre farmyard.
FEAST - FEAST is Funding Emerging Art with Sustainable Tactics. Over a locally-sourced organic supper, FEAST democratically curates and funds local artists.
EDIBLE CITY – A journey through the Bay Area food movement following farmers, cooks, activists, and educators who are fighting for food justice in their communities
*Full disclosure – Kickstarter is my brother’s company, and yes, it rules.
