Greenwashing at the Green Festival?

Last weekend my fantastic assistant Lisa Fiorvante and I attended the NYC Green Festival. This event, hosted in a number of cities around the country is a project of Green America and Global Exchange which aims provide a platform for organizations & business to showcase their programs and products to forward thinking, socially, ethically, and environmentally conscious consumers. Just our kind of place! While this event didn't focus specifically on the issue of "environmental toxins", being a "green festival" meant that nearly all the vendors there were offering programs or products that were connected to this conversation. This part ofREAD MORE

Lifelong Learning & Chemical Headlines You Need To Read

As a health coach, you’re in a constant state of learning - about food, nutrition, the human body... about your clients, human behavior, and motivation.... and about running a business, staying competitive, and being profitable. Because of our need and desire to be “in the know” in so many areas, we must be in a perpetual state of learning. Some people might balk at this idea, but we don’t! Health coaches are a rare breed of people committed to lifelong learning, and discovery. I pride myself on having a stronger desire to learn now, than I ever have before inREAD MORE

How do I get rid of what’s already in me?

If I had to write down the most frequently asked questions about environmental toxins, ‘how do I get rid of what’s already inside me’ would surely top the list. This is an important question, and definitely the most obvious one when thinking about chemical-build up in the body. Just this past week I attended a lecture at the New York Academy of Medicine that addressed in part environmental toxins presence in human breast milk. Sitting behind me was Doula and Lactation Consultant who asked about how someone can remove toxins that have built up, and is there ever a pointREAD MORE

Does "detoxing" miss the point?

As a health coach, and part of the community of health & wellness practitioners, you know how front and center detoxes are. There are literally hundreds of detoxes out there - from short ones running only 5 days to longer ones running 3-4 weeks. Sugar detoxes, junk food detoxes, green juice detoxes, the list is long. The point of these short detoxes is to give your clients a supported leg up on getting their health on track - they're designed to give your clients a taste of what feeling really good actually feels like - and they're designed to beREAD MORE

Hormones & Chemicals - Small Doses Matter

Did you know that there are around 70,000 checmials in the US that exhibit hormonal effects in the body? Yikes! Couple chronic toxic exposure with poor eating habits, too much sugar and processed foods, not enough exercise, stress of everyday life, and we've got a recipe for some seriously out of balance hormones. This hormonal imbalance is likely at the root of most people's weight problems, infertility, reduced sex drive, increased cancer risks, and could very likely be a significant factor in increases in childhood diseases and developmental and behavioral problems. Although I'm not the hormonal exerpt that Andrea NakayamaREAD MORE

BPA-FREE? Not so fast...

A few weeks back I posted about Bisphenol-A - the chemical plasticizer that also has the misfortune of being a synthetic estrogen. (That just doesn't sound good). This is a chemical that's used, among a number of other places, in clear, hard polycarbonate plastics. Think: Brita Water Pitchers, food processor bowls, and yes, your fancy and much loved VitaMix or Blendtec blenders. BPA's history as a synthetic estrogen goes way back to the 1930's where it was actually used as pharmaceutical hormone before being replaced with the more potent and way more horribly devastating chemical DES. But BPA found aREAD MORE

Does Your Detox Go "There"?

See that photo on the left? How many times have you seen that specific image? If you're in the Health Coaching world, you've probably seen it a trillion times! I know I have! It's graced dozens and dozens of health coach websites AND detox programs. Why am I sharing this with you? To illustrate the fact that with sooooo many health coaches hitting the scene (which is amazing) it's more important than ever for you to set what YOU do apart from the pack (I'd start by NEVER using this photo - no matter how great it is!). I'm Okay, You're Okay.... Well, Sort Of

Last week I gave a talk to a group of parents at my niece's preschool about toxins in the kitchen that might be impacting the health of their children. These parents dragged out on a rainy night to hear me talk and were hungry for simple solutions to avoid or minimize toxic exposures at home... there were lots of questions, a bunch of gasps, and a few "omg"'s throughout the night. But them my favorite question came up: "I was raised using all these same products, and I'm okay... is this really a big deal?" The answer: YES! It's aREAD MORE

Do You Walk Your Talk?

Do you "walk your talk"... fully and completely? My guess is that you're someone who has been into health and wellness for a while, right? You've plugged into healthy eating, lots of green veggies & fruits, cutting back or cutting out junky processed foods... you're probably into staying fit and active. Yoga, running, pilates... or maybe a mixture. Sound about right? Healthy living probably comes naturally to you by now. You're likely the "healthy" person in the family - the "green sheep" as it were! (every family's got one!) You would never, say, pick up a pack of cigarettes, orREAD MORE

Most Detoxes Miss The Point. Here's Why:

This is DETOX season! Almost every health coach out there offers some sort of detox or cleanse, ranging from liquid heavy ones like the Master Cleanse and juice fasts, to super-food based ones packed with hemp seeds, kale, and sprouted seeds. Even if you don't run your own detox program, you've likely participated in one yourself. As great as these detoxes or cleanses might be in theory, in practice they fall short. Why? Because they almost never address one of the primary sources of toxins in the first place - toxins in our environment. These are the chemicals that weREAD MORE
