Food Focus: Stone Fruits

stone fruits

Send me to the farmers market in August, and I’ll return with more fruits than I know what to do with!! This is my favorite fruit month by far with some of the best fruits North America has to offer… peaches, nectarines, apricots, a ton of varieties of plums, cherries, late blueberries, blackberries… it’s heaven.

Stone fruits take center stage though during August, and are at their absolute best. Stone fruits like the ones I just listed (except blueberries, which aren’t stone fruits) are classified as “drupes” and share familial lines with things like cashews, coffee, and and olives. (more…)

Fresh picked peaches!

Nothing, NOTHING, says summer more than peaches! A few weeks ago I went peach and blueberry picking with my good friend Jaime, and we had a blast! Close to 20 peaches for a mere $5! We left sticky, and full of fruit… the perfect reward for our hard work. While eating peaches right off the pit, in all their chin-drippy glory is a wonderous thing, I like to mix it up a bit and jazz them up (as if they need it!). These grilled peaches are to DIE for. There’s something extra special about doing this on an actual grill outdoors, but they’re still absurdly delicious done on the stove top. A nice bowl of nutty granola and a splash of almond milk make this a heavenly breakfast (or simple, homey dessert). Try these grilled peaches over a bowl of vanilla ice cream, and you will not be disappointed!

The sheer level of creativity of raw foods these days is enough to inspire even the hardest of traditional chefs and encourage first timers to become far more adventurous.

For some, raw foods is a passing fad, and a quirky “look honey, I’m eating “raw” lasagna!!!” (more…)

Cooling Summer Foods

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

We naturally crave foods according to the season - comforting soups in the winter, sprouts and salads as spring starts to bloom, and - who are we kidding - ice cream in the summer! Our bodies are always seeking balance, so it makes sense that we’d crave foods to counteract the effect of the weather.

Ayurvedic practitioners, masters of seasonal eating, have these recommendations for eating cooling, summer food: (more…)

Lettuce!

Everyone knows it’s healthy to eat fresh, uncooked fruits and vegetables every day.  Raw foodists take this way of eating to heart and base all their meals around different preparations of raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. While some people debate the health merits of eating a totally raw food diet year round, it certainly it a great diet for the long, hot days of summer!

Raw foods, in addition to having abundant nutrients, (more…)
