Beauty & Skincare
Finding safer personal care products and make-up used to be a real challenge, but thanks to a growing interest in healthy living, and avoiding exposure to toxic chemicals, it’s become far easier! These are some of my favorite products, both for their safe ingredients, and for how wonderful they are!

Josh Rosebrook makes some of most luxe, non-toxic skincare products I’ve ever used. This hydration mask is a god-send for tired, dry skin. Pair it with his Hydrating Accelerator for the best results. This line is one of my new favorites! Find Josh’s products over at The Detox Market
Dr. Alkaitis products are also in the “luxe” category, but worth every penny. This Nourishing Treatment Oil, along with the Herbal Toner he makes are part of my twice daily routine. The great thing is that even though they are a little on the expensive side, they last a really long time!
Devita has been making great, non-toxic skincare products since 1998. I love everything in this line, including the fact that most of their products are packaged in glass, and that I can pick them up at most natural food stores!
The Evan Healy line of serums, hydrosols, masks, cleansers, and skincare are some of the best I’ve ever seen. Many products are Certified Organic, and are always free of harmful, and even questionable ingredients. The Rose Face Care Kit is ideal for balancing the skin, but check out the Blue line if you’ve got sensitive skin!
MyChelle products are ultra-clean and available at Whole Foods and other natural food stores around the country, making them an easily accessible option without having to order online. They make a full line of cleansers, exfoliators, serums, moisturizers, and sun protection.
I love Acure products and use them daily. I’ve been using their shampoo for about 4 years now and love it. They offer a full line of skincare, hair products, and body lotions, all readily available at Whole Foods and other natural grocers. They are a great inexpensive and readily available line. You can even find some Acure products at Target!
This ultra-gentle cleanser from Beautycounter removes makeup and impurities without surfactants that can strip away natural oils. It’s mild formula respects skin’s balance and replenishes essential hydration so your face feels soft and never dry or tight.
I love a good face scrub, but most products out there are way too abrasive. I love this cream exfoliator because it uses non-abrasive jojoba beads to help slough off dry, dull skin, and sweep away impurities, and it leaves my skin soft and glowy!
Charcoal face masks are all the rage these days, and this one from Beautycounter has a cult-like following. They use kaolin clay which deep-cleans and balances, absorbs excess oil and draws out impurities, while the activated charcoal minimizes the appearance of pores. As someone with oily, congested skin, this product is a god-send.
Another skin care line of cleansers, toners, serums, oils and hair & body products from a company with a mission to create non-toxic products that are clinically proven to work. They are MadeSafe Certified, gluten free, and another line that packages mostly in glass.
Want to explore even more ultra-clean, high performing beauty products? Check out The Detox Market, an online & retail store that curates the best non-toxic skin & beauty care products available. They even have a monthly subscription service that’s perfect for product junkies who do not want to compromise on the quality of ingredients.
Annmarie Skincare is a personal favorite for a lot of reasons, not least of which is that the Gianni family who’s behind this line are dear friends and wonderful people. I share about their products a lot because I think they exemplify what it means to create clean, nourishing, non-toxic skincare. Come check out an interview with founder Kevin Gianni and learn more about them!
While this pressed powder is my favorite, everything in the Alima Pure line is excellent. They have a full line of makeup, including eyeshadows, brow pencils, mascara, and lipstick.
Vapour is a truly luxe brand of non-toxic, and largely organic makeup. They operate their own USDA approved organic lab, use biodegradable ingredients and recycled packaging. They offer great sample kits where you can try a selection of 5 products for only $15!
Juice Beauty is another skincare line that’s readily available at places like Whole Foods, and stores like Ulta & Bluemercury. They offer a full line of moisturizers, cleaners, masks, serums and makeup. While not what I would call “ultra clean” this line is still miles better than conventional products.
Beauty Counter is a mission driven, education-first company that’s seeking to completely change how skincare & makeup products are regulated in the US. Their products are EWG verified so you can be sure that they are free of harmful and toxic ingredients. This top rated product will help to cover dark under-eye circles or any other blemish you may have.
100% Pure was one of the earlier non-toxic skincare & makeup lines to hit the scene. They have a unique line of make up that are are colored using vibrant fruit, vegetable, tea and other plant pigments, including shades for darker skin tones. This has been a favorite line of mine for years!
RMS Beauty’s Living Luminizer has been a cult favorite for a long time now. This gives you a subtle “lit from within” glow when you apply it to the high points of your cheeks, cupid’s bow, and the inner corners of the eyes. This is one of those versatile multi-use products that make you look suspiciously good with minimal effort!
Natural beauty and luxury cosmetics are typically mutually exclusive descriptions…unless you’re a company like Kjaer Weis. Their products are super clean and come in re-fillable packaging (hello, sustainability!) Their blush is very blendable and applies easily with the warmth of your hands.
W3LL People products are not only EWG Verified, they’re available at Target stores! They a full line of foundations, concealer, cheek stains, eye shadows and lip colors. I love this lip butter!
This company makes incredible makeup, but they’re most famous for their wide selection of lip sticks, lip pencils, and lip gloss. These are lux products that are reasonably priced. There are few ingredients that I’m not in love with, but overall this is an excellent line that’s lightyears better than conventional makeup.
Mineral Fusion eyeliners are clean, creamy, and easy to find! It’s great to have clean beauty staples for those times when you need something to feel a little more put-together. This does that at a reasonable price!
I’ve been using this eyeliner almost exclusively for about 4 years now, and I absolutely love it. My eyelids get oily pretty fast, which means most eyeliners end up bleeding and transferring to my upper eyelid. But not this stuff! Stays on all day. I have yet to find a better product on the market!
Hands down, my favorite mascara. I’ve tried probably a dozen brands over the years, and I always come back to this one. No smearing, no flaking. I’ve not tried other products in this line, but I LOVE this one!
As a redhead/strawberry blonde, my brows are super light. I literally never leave the house without filling in my brows. This brow pencil is dreamy, and has a cute little brush to help with blending in those brow strokes!
Mineral Fusion’s eyeshadow trio is free from Gluten, Cruelty, Parabens, Artificial Colors, Fragrances, and Talc. Mineral Fusion’s line, although not always perfect, does make clean beauty products very accessible at an affordable price. Most of their products are very reliable and easy to both find and use!
This is my go-to sunscreen in the summer. It’s light, goes on clear, is easy to apply, and doesn’t leave my skin tacky. It’s a little spendy, but I think it’s totally worth it!
Beautycounter is generally an über safe bet! They show a sincere commitment to transparency and integrity which shows up in their third party testing. They’re products are a little on the pricey side but you do get what you pay for – ie; top notch! This broad spectrum (UVA & UVB blocking) sunscreen is a hit.
A very popular sunscreen on EWG, Suntegrity has a smooth formula with a relatively light texture compared to most mineral sunscreens. That said, this does leave a very heavy white cast upon application but it usually goes away once it settles into the skin.
This is one of the best sunscreens for everyday use. It’s ideal for all skin types but is especially great for those with sensitive skin! It’s very hydrating but doesn’t feel like an oil slick on your face.
MyChelle Sun Shield is best for those with oily skin. It has a very soft matte texture once dry which is a complete departure from most sunscreens that leave your face feeling all sorts of greasy. This formula dries fast so you have to smooth it on your face quickly. There are a couple tinted shades of this product as well that is great if you’re looking for a tinted SPF!
This very light-weight (and barely tinted) sunscreen works wonders! Although everyone’s skin behaves differently, it’s formulated to work with every skin type and has a subtle tint to it which offsets some of the white cast that you get with mineral sunscreens.
I’ve been using this deodorant pretty exclusively for the past 6 years and am never without it. It’s a little spendy, but it last for ages, and works really well. Like all deodorants, you have to find the one the works with your body chemistry.
This gel-to-powder formula is seriously swoon-worthy! Silky and lightweight, this deodorant works beautifully and a little goes a looong way. It’s 70% organic and utilizes baking soda to mitigate bacteria so if you’re sensitive to baking soda, steer clear! Vapour uses essential oils to fragrance their products and the palo santo blood orange is my absolute favorite!

If you have sensitive skin, natural deodorants without baking soda are a great option. I’ve used soapwalla’s deodorants for years and they work great! They also come in small travel sizes that are super convenient.
Cream deodorants used to suck. Now there are so many of these pit pastes that come in a variety of scents (via essential oils) and are free of toxic ingredients that you find in conventional antiperspirants. Even more good news: it actually works!
Schmidt’s is a great deodorant that’s readily available from retailers, including Costco! No nasty chemicals, effective, and even good for sensitive skin. They have a super fun line of plant based fragrances like rose & vanilla, cedar & juniper, and even jasmine tea! Schmidt’s also makes toothpaste soaps. They are a Portland, OR based company that I love supporting.
Another great natural, non-toxic deodorant made with simple but effective ingredients. The texture is very soft and comes in a convenient twist up bottle. They offer unscented natural deodorant at a very fair price. Great unisex option!

Aside from their UH-MAZING packaging and branding, this company demonstrates a clear commitment to sustainability. Their packaging is all re-useable and recyclable (which is always great). The product itself is clean, effective, and easy to use.

Herbalist formulated, non-toxic, and universally appealing scent. What’s not to love? Even better: for those of you who love to wear black, this deodorant won’t leave those chalky white streaks on your clothes!
*baking soda free*
Okay, okay — I know. I already shared one of their deodorants BUT it’s too good! This natural (and baking soda free) stick deodorant is easy to apply on-the-go and an easy transition for those who aren’t used to using cream deodorants yet. No messy application or plastic!
